Australia Institutes Restrictions for Carry-on Liquids

We just returned from Australia. Security restrictions for liquids, creams and gels in carry-on luggage were put in place for international flights departing Australia starting March 31, 2007.

The Australian restrictions are similar to the ones already in place in Europe and the US. The Australian restrictions are metric..... containers no larger than 100ml (3.4 oz.) of liquids, creams or gels.... packed in a one liter zip top bag.... one bag per person. But the Australians are requiring lipstick and chap sticks to be put into the bags also. We read a report that included bars of soap and solid deodorants.

Our bags tend to get heavier as we travel... by the time we left, even our carry-on size bags were over the weight limit for carry-on, so we had to check them and didn't test this rule about soap. For more details check the Australian Department of Transport and Regional Services. Click below and find the link on our Travel Security Alert Packing Guide page.

It's always best to check with the website for the specific countries of your departure and arrival. On other trips we could carry our chap stick and lipstick in our pockets, but we had to dump them in the plastic bag to come home from Australia.

Check, too, what you can buy at duty free and how early you need to buy it. If you're flying to many countries, you can just make your purchase and carry it with you. BUT... To purchase a bottle to be taken to the US, you need to allow plenty of time because they need to deliver it to the plane and they have time limits on this. So once you check in, make duty free your first stop..... just remember if you have to make a connection in the US, you'll have to check that bottle.
